Stephen Edwin King (born September 21, 1947) is an American author of over 200 stories including over 50 best-selling horror and fantasy novels. King was the 2003 recipient of the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. He is known for his great eye for detail, for continuity and for inside references; many stories that may seem unrelated are often linked by secondary characters, fictional towns, or off-hand references to events in previous books. Many of the settings for King’s book are in Maine, though often-fictional locations. He has been called by many alluring epithets…The Master of the Macabre, King of Horror, Wizard of Weird, and Artist of Darkness and such. More than 80 million copies of his scare-raiser have sold around the world and continue to sell. Many of his novels have been filmed with much success. OK, now you have read HIS BOOKS, you have seen HIS MOVIES. But best-selling author Stephen King is every bit as interesting as his works. Here are some little information facts about Stephen King.

---Stephen King is nearly as passionate about music as he is about writing. In fact, Stephen King is even a member of a band. The Rock Bottom Remainders are a group of authors that include Dave Barry, Amy Tan, and many others.

---King’s parents separated when he was a toddler and his mother raised he and his older brother, David, from then on. He spent some of his childhood in Indiana and Connecticut before moving back to Maine at age 11.

---Stephen King’s first best-selling novel was Carrie. The main character in the novel, Carrieta White, was based on two young girls King met during his school years. He received a mere $2500 initial advance for Carrie, but the paperback rights eventually sod for $400,000. The world almost never got to meet Carrie. Stephen King threw the original manuscript in the garbage because he was unhappy with it. His wife, the novelist Tabitha King, who loved the novel, retrieved it and convinced him to reconsider.

---According to King’s official page, he could not fight in the Vietnam War because a draft board found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet and punctured eardrums.

---Derry and Castle Rock, Maine, do not really exist, only in Stephen King’s stories. Derry, if it did exist, would be located a few miles west of Bangor, Maine, and Castle Rock would be located just south of the city of Mexico in the Oxford district of Maine.

---King is a lifelong Boston Red Sox Fan

---Stephen King admits to having a seriously additive personality, and he has overcome many of his own personal demons. Many of his earlier books were written while he was drinking and doing hard drugs, such as cocaine, and he hardly remembers writing many of them. Stephen King is a recovering coke addict, alcoholic and smoker. He credits his wife, the novelist Tabitha King, for helping him quit his dangerous vices.

---Stephen King suffers from an eye disease known as Macular Degeneation. The light-sensitive cells in the back of his eyes malfunction and could eventually lead to blindness.

---In 1999, Stephen King was nearly killed when he was struck by a Dodge van while walking near his home in Bangor, Maine. Thrown fourteen feet off the road, Stephen King suffered severe injures, including a broken hip, a split knee, and four broken ribs. His leg was broken in at least nine places and his spine was badly chipped.

---Since 2003, King has written about pop culture in a column called “The Pop of King” appealing on the back page of Entertainment Weekly every third week.

Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors in the world, with almost as many movies as books under his belt. He is an amazing author and quite an impressive human being.
